The gameplay in Tony Hawk's Underground 2 is similar to that of previous Tony Hawk games: the player skates around in a 3D environment modeled after various cities and attempts to complete various goals. Most goals involve skating on or over various objects or performing combos. Scores are calculated by adding the sum of the point value of each trick strung together in a combo and then multiplying by the number of tricks in the combo.

Many levels return from previous games, including an expanded warehouse, School and Downhill Jam from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater , Canada, Los Angeles and Airport from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 , and Philadelphia from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. The main menu contains the player next to the "Wheel of Loogies." The choices are on the wheel.

A classic mode was added to THUG 2, which allows players to skate through both new and remade classic levels in the traditional 10-goal, two-minute time limit mode that was present in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, complete with the stat points scattered all around the levels. In classic mode, the player chooses from one or two levels in which to attempt to complete enough goals to advance. All of the "remade" levels are accessible only through "Classic Mode" although once unlocked, it is possible to use them in any mode except "Story Mode".

Ultimate Carnage introduces a brand new series of tracks which are based anywhere from busy streets to storm water drains.

The cars are more detailed than previous games in the series, employing the latest in dynamic lighting and shadow technology, and a greatly enhanced damage and physics engine where each car is made of up to 40 separate destructible parts. The single player game supports up to 11 other AI-controlled cars in each race.

A new multiplayer format is also included, this runs on the Games for Windows - Live system which requires you to either sign in to your Xbox LIVE or Games for Windows LIVE Gamertag, or sign up for one for free. Also, the LAN function is not available in this game, unlike the previous two Flatout games for Windows.

El Matador has something of a Hitman or Splinter Cell feel because of the gritty settings, the true-crime storyline where you're trying to take down the heirs to Pablo Escobar single-handedly, and the fact that just a few bursts of fire or a couple of well-placed grenades can send you to back to Washington in a body bag. But this isn't a tactical shooter or a sneaker. On the contrary, this is one of the fastest, most traditional shooters seen in recent years. It has a Doom-like pace (and soundtrack), a generic selection of weapons, and tons of enemies that are waiting around every corner. If you slow down, you'll get pinned down by withering fire and then killed by either the barrage of lead directed your way or the grenades that are always efficiently tossed into hiding spots.

Although this sounds like a dream come true for an old-school shooter fan, excruciating difficulty ruins El Matador. Those hordes of enemies noted above never seem to miss, unerringly nailing you again and again across rooms, hallways, and fields. If you stick Corbet's neck out even the tiniest bit, you get shot in moments--even if the bad guy doing the gold-medal shooting is hunkered down a few dozen meters away behind a palm tree or a desk with nothing more than the top of his head exposed. These shots come out of nowhere and drain you so regularly that your health and armor might as well be ticking down on a clock.

A tough game is one thing, but El Matador tilts the playing field so much that it feels like you're being cheated. While there is nothing in gaming like the satisfaction of beating a really hard shooter, there is a fine line between giving you the chance to earn that feeling of accomplishment and hammering you so relentlessly that continuing to play seems futile. If Plastic Reality ever makes another shooter, let's hope that it discovers where that line is in the future.

Balloon Jump is an up and down adventure as Stuart ascends via balloons to the top of the Pishkin Building to save Margalo from Falcon. In Roof Skate, Stuart gets air as he zips from building to building collecting pieces for his model airplane, which he needs for the final game -- Air Dodge. In this final game, Stuart flies his airplane to the spot where Falcon has hidden Stuart's mother's ring.

Though both Story Mode and Free Play Mode feature the same games, Story Mode presents them sequentially, while Free Play allows players to choose the games in any order (or play one game repeatedly). Helpful items include fruit for extra points, point bonuses for timely finishes and flowers to boost Stuart's health meter. Falcon must be avoided to preserve health in each game. Other features include a bonus gallery for viewing still pictures of movie scenes, printable certificates of achievement, and automatic recording of the top ten scores from each game.
